Engage with mentors

They’ll help you to land an internship and then job

Meet the mentors

A photo of StEP founder Dan Phillips (taken by the Boston Business Journal) who has assembled an amazing group of mentors.

StEP founder Dan Phillips has been an executive in five technology growth companies over a 30+ year period. He is connected with many venture capital backed companies in the Boston area.

Dan has recruited an amazing group of mentors from these companies for UMass Boston students. They are rising professionals who are excited to share their experiences in the industry and guide you towards a path built for long-term success. Check them out on LinkedIn.

How mentors engage with you

If you apply and are accepted into StEP,  you are paired with mentors with similar backgrounds and interests. Here’s how the mentors will help you:

Search for internship

*Mentors advise you on how to search for 5 to 10 potential internships for you to apply to. (Recommend appropriate sites and methods to search for internships). You do the work and come back to mentors with the internship list.

Prepare targeted application

*Mentors advise you on how to go through the internship application process. (Recommend how to review the internship description and company and then create tailored resumes and cover letters designed specifically for each internship). You do the work and come back to mentor with tailored resumes and cover letters.

Prepare for phone screen interview

*Mentors advise you on how to go through the phone screen process. (Recommend how to do research on the internship, company, and industry, and prepare a list of questions the interviewer may ask and answers you may give. Also, recommend a list of questions for you to ask). You do the work and come back to mentors with the notes and material you will use for the phone interview.

Prepare for on-site interview

*Mentors advise you on how to go through the on-site interview process. (Recommend how to do more detailed research on the internship, company, and industry, and prepare a list of questions the interviewers may ask and answers you may give. Also recommend a more detailed list of questions for you to ask). You do the work and come back to mentors with the notes and materials you will use for the on-site interview.

Follow-up

*Mentors advise you on how to follow up with all company contacts after the interview process. (Recommend emails to send and messages to convey). You do the work and come back to mentors with the emails you will send to company contacts.

Complete successful internship

*Mentors periodically review the internship experience with you and guide you towards a successful internship completion. You periodically update mentors on internship experience.

Apply for a full-time position

*Mentors work with you to apply and go through the interview process for your first career opportunity upon graduation. You periodically update mentors on the targeted positions you are focusing on for your first career opportunity.

How you engage with mentors

The StEP mentors are all full-time professional employees donating their time to help you. And the technology growth companies the mentors are referring you to are all fast moving companies with no time to waste. We ask students participating in this program to respond to mentors and companies they have been assigned/referred to with business level urgency and professionalism. Be punctual, be prepared and be ready to learn!
